Tips & TricksHow
to pick raspberries.
Wear appropriate footwear. Sturdy shoes, such as sneakers or workboots are best. Remember, you are walking through a field (uneven, grass, dirt, dusty, rocks). You may wish to wear a hat, the sun can be very intense in the field while you pick. Sunblock is definitely recommended. We recommend that you use the containers that we provide. Other containers may allow or cause berries to become damaged. Holding your hand underneath the berry(ies), gently pull the fruit towards you. Pick large or small, red or deep red berry in your area. (Purple berries are usually over-ripe. If you pick them be especially careful of them, because they will turn to juice quickly. If you are instructed to do so, pick both sides of your row until you have as many berries as you require to fill your container. Raspberries are EXTREMELY fragile and very perishable, so handle with care. Be sure to look high and low, under and deep within the leaves to find a bounty of beautiful berries. You may even glance back over where you’ve just picked. Even we have seen missed berries that way. The container is full when the berries reach the brim and are not falling out. The more you try to pack your container, the more likely you are to damage your berries; because of this, we encourage everyone to pick pints only. How should I store my raspberries? DO NOT leave your raspberries in a hot car. Raspberries are EXTREMELY perishable. You can store fresh raspberries in the refrigerator for 1-2 days (less is better). Shallow containers are best to prevent crushing. DO NOT rinse berries until ready to serve or process. DO NOT wash raspberries before freezing. Freezer life is approximately one year. |
